Tshwane district hospital patients served warm meal

The hospital initiated a soup drive campaign promoting comfort and care to their patients in waiting lines.

Tshwane District Hospital served patients in waiting lines with warm soup to help reduce the anxiety of waiting for service during the “I Serve with a Smile” campaign.

The feeding initiative took place on August 14 and occurs at least once a week.

Tshwane District Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Monene Mogashoa said this initiative started during winter with the elderly, disabled and young patients who would queue from the early morning to receive their services.

“We realised they wouldn’t have had the time to eat anything as they hurried to come and queue in the line.”

She said patients responded positively by complimenting the campaign and requested it continue weekly.

“Since it was cold, the executive committee (EXCO) managers deemed it fit to serve a protein soup made from meat, beans/lentils and vegetables.

Upon serving each patient, we do inform them about the ingredients used and those who have allergies have an option to have tea/coffee with bread instead.”

To prepare and distribute the soup, the EXCO members divided themselves into the hospital’s waiting areas.

Mogashoa said the soup drive reduces the anxiety of patients waiting in line for hours.

“The MEC of Health always emphasises the importance of personalised service and encourages hospital staff to engage with each patient individually while serving with a smile.

A smile, a kind word, or a short conversation can make a big difference in a patient’s day.

By implementing these ideas, the campaign not only serves soup but also uplifts the spirits of patients and staff alike,” Mogashoa said.

The hospital’s long-term goal is to launch a bigger campaign with more resources and a bigger budget to purchase ingredients for other options of serving a variety of menus to the patients.
