Rotary club celebrates 90th birthday of long-serving member
Despite using a wheelchair, Erica Moll loves to help other people and to play games.
The Rotary Club of Pretoria Capital celebrated the 90th birthday of Erica Moll, one of its longstanding members.
Erica Moll was born in Singapore in 1934 and has lived in Pretoria east for over 40 years.
She moved to Perth, Australia with her parents when she was six years old and attended school there. She later qualified as a registered nurse.
As a qualified nurse, she spent years caring and providing love and warmth to others before moving to South Africa.
In 1981 Moll moved to Pretoria and established a very successful real estate business.
Moll is a widow and has four children, 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was the first female Rotarian to join the club in 2004 when Rotary International had just decided to accept women into the organisation.
Moll has always attended her Tuesday rotary meetings and provided a service where needed.
She is very grateful and proud of her children and grandchildren, all of whom are professionals ranging from scientists to physiotherapists and some government diplomats.
Despite her disability, having lost a leg, Moll said she enjoys playing bridge, scrabble and other games.
“Particularly I enjoy the fellowship of other players.”
She said her motto is “never complain” and always have a positive attitude towards life.
“Despite living life in a wheelchair, I learned to appreciate life, to never complain and to always be happy.”
She said she enjoys helping other people and putting a smile on other people’s faces.
Moll said one of her memories is during World War 2 when her family fled from Singapore to Australia.
The Rotary Club Pretoria East and the Bronberg Retirement Village surprised Moll with knitted blankets.
“We trust that the knee blanket provided by the knitting project of the Rotary Club of Pretoria east will provide warmth to her for many years to come,” said assistant district governor for Rotarian, Doulien Knopjes.
“Erica never missed her Tuesday meetings at 18:00 at the Waterkloof Country Club with the Rotary Club of Pretoria Capital. She contributed to many projects, especially those that helped the old and the poor. She was part of the blanket drive and wheelchair project,” said Toni Matekele from the Rotary Club.
