Absent boundary wall at Pretoria east cemetery raises concern
Mourners visiting the cemetery are allegedly harassed by residents of the Cemetery View informal settlement.
A lack of a boundary wall on the western side of a Pretoria east cemetery has sparked grave concerns among residents.
The cemetery has become vulnerable to trespassing, and vandalism, and the safety of the final resting place for many beloved family members and community members is compromised.
Residents are calling for action to secure the cemetery and restore its integrity, ensuring that it remains a safe place.
The cemetery on Matt Street in Pretorius Park is opposite Cemetery View informal settlement, and it is alleged that mourners are harassed by the informal settlement dwellers.
Recently locals were urged to save the cemetery through the CUP initiative, which would see private partnerships assist the city with general upkeep and landscaping as well as build a wall to make it safer for mourners.
However, ward 101 councillor Malcolm de Klerk said the building of the wall has stalled.
“Due to the length of time taken by the City of Tshwane to consider the proposal, the potential partnership has been withdrawn indefinitely,” De Klerk said.
He said the wall is needed to provide dignity to the buried and security for mourners.
Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said funds have not yet been secured to construct the wall.
“There are continuous engagements with local communities through the ward councillor’s office to find solutions to the challenges experienced at the Pretoria east cemetery,” Mashigo said.
