Drunk drivers will be dealt with this festive season – metro police vows

At the launch, special buses were handed over, which will help in addressing suspected drunken driving incidents.

The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) and other law enforcement agencies will clamp down on drunk driving, by-law infringement and various crimes this coming festive season.

MMC of Community Safety Hannes Coetzee said this during the Tshwane metro festive season crime prevention operations launch on Thursday.

Two alcohol evidence centre buses were donated by South African Breweries (SAB) to aid the TMPD in their fight against alcohol-related crime.

Mayor of Tshwane, Dr Nasiphi Moya and Commissioner of TMPD Yolanda Faro were also at the launch.

“While we want all residents to enjoy a well-deserved break during December, it is essential that this is done responsibly and with full respect for the city’s laws and regulations,” Coetzee said.

He said to safeguard residents during this period, the festive season crime prevention operations will enhance police visibility and focus intensively on by-law enforcement and crime-prevention measures.

“These efforts are vital to maintaining safety and order throughout Tshwane. A key highlight of the launch was the handover of two alcohol evidence centre buses, generously donated by South African Breweries.”

He said these specialised buses will play a crucial role in detecting and addressing incidents of suspected drunk driving, a major contributor to road accidents during the festive period.

“The city extends its sincere gratitude to SAB for their commitment to promoting responsible alcohol consumption and for supporting the metro’s initiatives to address this pressing issue,” Coetzee said.

He added that their partnership exemplifies the kind of collaboration needed to build a safe and secure environment for all.

“The metro is dedicated to working closely with residents, the private sector and community partners to ensure that everyone can enjoy the festive season safely and responsibly.”

He called on everyone to join the city in making this a season of joy, respect and shared responsibility.

Faro said during the festive season when everyone is relaxing, criminals tend to be opportunistic.

“TMPD will strive to create a safe environment for all residents to enjoy this festive season.”

She said everyone is tasked with a responsibility to contribute to stabilising and creating a safe city during this festive season and to help reduce road fatalities.”

She said the launch of the Mobile Alcohol Bus Centre marked an important milestone in the efforts to ensure public safety and combat alcohol-related crimes during the festive period.

Faro said with the intensified operational strength, officers and other road safety role players, commuters and motorists will observe highly visible policing, including regional and freeway policing.

“The teams will monitor vehicle and driver fitness, speed law enforcement, driving under the influence of alcohol and other driving transgressions.”

Faro said TMPD is taking a “zero tolerance” stance against drunk driving.

“We will clamp down on motorists driving under the influence of alcohol, unroadworthy vehicles and motorists with infringement fines will be dealt with.”

Faro concluded by wishing all residents a blessed and safe festive season.
