Over 100k Tshwane prepaid meters yet to be updated
Eskom had also warned customers that there would be no extension to the November 24 deadline for the Token Identifier (TID) update.
Tshwane has revealed that about 36% of prepaid electricity meters are not vending tokens on the new KRN2 system hence urged residents to convert to ensure they are compliant by the November 24 deadline.
With the deadline looming, MMC for Utility Services Frans Boshielo warned customers that the failure to update their meter would result in the inability to load electricity tokens.
“I am urgently calling on 127 123 prepaid electricity customers to ensure that their meter is compliant.”
He said the update, which should be done manually by prepaid meter users, is important to ensure the continued provision of electricity.
Boshielo said if customers do not update their meter by November 24, they will be unable to load an electricity token thereafter.
“The Tshwane metro has a fleet of 357 155 prepaid meters,” said Boshielo, adding that so far only 230 032 are updated.
“A total of 127 123 (36%) are not because customers have not converted them.”
He said if the update is not done by November 24, the outstanding meters will not be able to load electricity tokens generated on KRN2.
He encouraged the customers to visit the metro customer care centre for assistance if they were unable to complete the update on their own.
He also said councillors are available to assist customers.
“The meter conversion requires the loading of two 20-digit tokens.”
He said that customers who bought electricity tokens before updating their meters to KRN2 should ensure that the old tokens are uploaded to the meters before the conversion.
“The old tokens will not be accepted by the meters after conversion to KRN2.”
Power utility Eskom recently warned that there would be no extension to the November 24 deadline for the update.
Eskom also urged prepaid electricity customers to recode their meter by November 24, as required by the Standard Transfer Specification Association (STSA).
It said approximately 6.9 million prepaid meters in Eskom-supplied areas were affected by the system update and had already prepared 97% of meters for the update simplifying the process for its customers.
“This Do-It-Yourself process requires customers to purchase credit tokens from authorised vendors, after which they will receive two sets of 20-digit codes to enter into their meters for the update.”
Eskom said if customers need help with the update, they must call 0860 037 566, visit the Eskom website or follow its social media platforms.
“Eskom remains committed to a smooth transition to KRN2 and ensuring uninterrupted service for all customers.”
