Alleged drug kingpin (77) and five others arrested in north of Pretoria

The Tshwane metro police uncovered a substantial quantity of drugs with a total estimated street value of R103 000.

The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) arrested five suspects, including a 77-year-old man believed to be a drug kingpin, as part of a major operation targeting drug trafficking and extortion in the region on November 15.

This comes after the TMPD Drug Unit acted on an anonymous tip-off regarding illicit drug activities in Mabopane.

The officers then conducted a raid on four suspected residences, leading to the discovery of 500 packets of nyaope. Nyaope is an addictive street drug.

The police confiscated more than 1 000 drugs during the operation. Photo supplied.

TMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said two suspects were arrested on charges of drug possession and dealing.

Mahamba said further investigation revealed connections to a wider syndicate involved in drug trafficking across Hammanskraal, Soshanguve, Mabopane and Pretoria North.

“The operation’s momentum continued when officers tracked down another suspect in Hammanskraal, who was found in possession of 700 packets of nyaope.

“These arrests were pivotal in leading authorities to the alleged kingpin in Theresapark,” said Mahamba.

Mahamba said the 77-year-old man now faces serious charges of drug possession and dealing, marking him as a key figure in the ongoing battle against drug-related crime in the area. This comes after officers uncovered a substantial quantity of drugs with a total estimated street value of R103 000.

The TMPD recovered a hijacked vehicle in Mabopane. Photo supplied.

“The TMPD Tactical Unit acted on a separate regarding a hijacked Isuzu bakkie in Mabopane, successfully recovering the vehicle and thwarting potential further criminal activity.

“The suspects have been detained and are expected to appear in court soon.”
