Hijackers in South Africa are now targeting these ten vehicles.

According to a report by Business Tech Data from the South African Police Services (SAPS), 66 cars are hijacked daily, representing an increase of 34% over pre-pandemic levels.

It revealed that around half of all hijackings occur in Gauteng, followed by the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, at about 14% each.

Data from the South African Police Services (SAPS) aligns with Fidelity Services Group’s experience.

This was further noted at the beginning of 2024, and its data indicated that a spike in hijackings would occur in the first half of 2024.

Here is a list of the ten vehicles (listed in alphabetic order)that are at high risk of being hijacked in South Africa in 2024:

  • BMW 3 Series;
  • Ford Ranger;
  • Hyundai i20;
  • Nissan NP200;
  • Toyota Corolla Cross;
  • Toyota Corolla;
  • Toyota Etios;
  • Toyota Fortuner (GD6 and D4D);
  • Toyota Hilux (GD6 and D4D);
  • Toyota Prados;

Here are some valuable tips to keep yourself and loved ones safe:

  • Avoid driving or parking in an unsecured area; be vigilant if you travel at night.
  • Drive with your windows closed and doors locked.
  • Keep valuables such as smartphones, computers and jewellery out of sight.
  • When a vehicle is following you close to your home or when an unknown car is parked close to your residence, drive past your house and head for a busy place, like 24-hour garages, hospitals, police stations, etc.
  • Consider taking a hijack prevention and awareness training programme from an institution like the National Hijack Prevention Academy.
