Manhunt for escapee involved in R80 highway robberies
The exact details of suspect Kudzani Mashiri’s escape are still unknown at this stage and police are requesting people with information about his whereabouts to come forward.
A manhunt has been launched for an escaped man believed to have been part of an armed robbery on the R80 highway.
Kudzani Mashiri escaped from police custody before making his court appearance at Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on November 19.
On November 20, around 12:00, police confirmed that the man was still on the loose, despite reports on social media that the man was rearrested.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said Mashiri was scheduled to appear in court when he allegedly escaped before making his appearance.
The details of how he escaped are still unknown.
“A case of escaping from lawful custody has been opened against Mashiri,” said Nevhuhulwi.
According to her, Mashiri was arrested in July by the Tshwane District Detective Task Team.
“The suspect was denied bail and was awaiting trial.”
The suspect is linked to the R80 spiking incidents that have been plaguing the busy route in the north of Pretoria.
The R80 has become a hotspot for spiking incidents, robberies and other crime incidents, which have left communities frustrated and afraid.
The highway has been plagued by a string of armed robberies, car hijackings, kidnappings, rapes, tyre spikings and violent attacks.
Police have been waging war against these R80 crimes.
