Sunnyside still in Top 30 stations failing to tackle serious crime
Pretoria Central police station is a usual feature among the top 30 stations plagued by serious crime however in this quarter, it saw significant decreases.
Sunnyside police station in the Pretoria CBD is the only one of two police stations in the national top 30 stations without improved stats relating to community-reported serious crimes.
This was indicated in the crime statistics for the quarter from July 1 to September 30, released by police minister Senzo Mchunu on November 25, marking Mchunu’s administration’s first 100 days in office.
In this quarter, serious crime reported at the Sunnyside police station had an uptick of 14 more counts from 1 372 in the same period last year.
This follows as other top 30 stations in the same category marked decreases.
Brooklyn police station in the east of Pretoria has a decrease in the serious crimes category by 73 counts from 1 716 in the 2023 period. Akasia police station in the north of Pretoria marked a decrease of 59 from 1 491 counts in 2023.

Here are some of this quarter’s stats for police stations servicing Pretoria Central:
Sunnyside:
Since the last quarter, Sunnyside police station saw an increase in contact crimes of 3.6%, with reported common assault cases increasing by 40% (115 up to 161).
Common robberies increased by a single count (105 to 106) as did assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), from 32 cases last quarter to 33.
Three attempted murder cases were reported for both this and the previous quarters, while reported murder cases decreased by a single count (4 down to 3).
Sexual offences decreased by five counts (20 down to 15) and robberies with aggravating circumstances cases decreased by 13.1% (191 down to 166).
No contact sexual offence was reported for this or the previous quarter. Rape cases (15 down to 14) and attempted sexual offences (1 to 0) both decreased by a single count each. Sexual assault cases also saw a decrease from four to one.
No cash-in-transit (CIT) heist, bank robbery, truck hijacking or arson was reported in the past five quarters.
Robberies at non-residential premises increased by five counts (10 up to 15) and robberies at residential premises decreased by 22 counts (24 down to 2).
Malicious damage to property cases increased by 14.0% from 50 cases last quarter up to 57.
Burglaries at non-residential premises increased by 11 counts (18 up to 29) and burglaries at residential premises decreased by 14 counts (56 down to 42).
Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases decreased by 14.1% (85 down to 73) and theft out of motor vehicle cases decreased by 2.4% (245 down to 239).
All theft cases not mentioned above increased by 5.6% (267 up to 282), with commercial crimes increasing by 11.2% (134 up to 149) and community-reported crimes by a single percent (1 372 to 1 386).
Shoplifting cases decreased by 19 counts (47 down to 28) and kidnapping cases increased by six (26 up to 32).
Crimes detected as a result of police action increased by 24.2% and drug-related crimes by 31.0% (116 up to 152 cases).
Driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol and detected drug cases increased by 43.5% (131 up to 188) and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition cases detected increased by two counts (7 to 9).
Sexual offence cases detected as a result of police action decreased by 26 counts (31 to 5).
Pretoria Central:
Pretorial Central police station is a usual feature among the top 30 stations plagued by serious crime however in this quarter, it saw significant decreases.
Contact crime cases decreased by 34.9%, the largest decrease being in robberies with aggravating circumstances (45.7%, 162 cases down to 88).
Common robberies decreased by 40.5% (126 to 75), attempted murders by 15.9% (82 down to 69), common assault cases by 39% (146 down to 89) and sexual offences by a single count (22 down to 21).
Three murder cases were reported for both this quarter and the previous, though attempted murder cases saw an increase of six counts (3 up to 9).
Rape cases decreased by two counts (17 down to 15), sexual assault cases by a single count (5 to 4) and no attempted sexual offences have been reported in the past three quarters.
Two contact sexual offence cases were reported in this quarter compared to none in the previous.
No CIT heist or bank robber was recorded for the past five quarters and one truck hijacking was reported this quarter compared to none in the last.
No arson case was reported this quarter compared to the two in the previous and malicious damage to property cases decreased by 22.2% (72 down to 56).
Carjackings decreased by 16 counts (20 down to 4) and robberies at non-residential premises decreased by a single count (10 to 9).
One robbery at residential premises was reported this quarter compared to none in the previous.
Burglaries at non-residential premises increased by 70.6% (34 up to 58) and theft out of or from motor vehicle cases decreased by 28.4% (261 down to 187).
Burglaries at residential premises decreased by six counts (18 down to 12) and theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases decreased by five counts (53 down to 48).
All theft cases not mentioned above decreased by 9.7% (300 down to 271), with shoplifting cases decreasing by 11.2% (125 down to 111 cases). Commercial crime cases decreased by 21.6% (125 up to 152) and kidnapping cases increased by seven counts (16 up to 23).
Crimes detected as a result of police action increased by 24.2% while detected DUI cases increased by 26.4% (53 to 67).
Detected illegal possession of firearm and ammunition cases increased by five counts (7 up to 12), detected drug-related crimes increased by 19.8% (126 to 151) and one sexual offence detected by police action was reported this quarter compared to none in the previous four.
