The Kwaggasrand community in Pretoria West is in mourning following the sudden passing of Bertie Hutchinson, a beloved figure in the community known for his unwavering commitment to helping others.

Hutchinson (50) passed away in his sleep on Saturday morning around 07:00.

According to his daughter, Megan Hutchinson, the cause of death appears to have been a heart attack.

“We are heartbroken and sad because we never expected this,” Megan expressed.

“My dad faced some health complications about six months ago, but after receiving medical help, he seemed better. This has come as a complete shock to us.”

Reflecting on her father’s character, Megan described him as a gentle soul with a big heart who loved to make people laugh.

“He was a teddy bear, and his kindness knew no bounds. He had a special way with children and cherished his grandchild immensely,” she said.

Hutchinson was more than just a father and husband; he was a pillar of the Kwaggasrand community.

He played an active role in local Christmas projects to help support others, and he was also the owner of a towing service.

“My dad was also deeply involved with the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and strived to ensure the safety of the community.”

Megan fondly recalled the special moments they shared, particularly when he taught her how to drive.

“He was my hero and my role model. If I had called him at 02:00 asking for help, he would have jumped to help, no matter where I was.

His friends would also call whenever they needed him, and he was always available, to assist with what they needed even in the middle of the night,” she said.

In a tribute to his legacy, Hutchinson’s family plans to continue his involvement in community Christmas projects to ensure that his spirit of generosity lives on.

“He would want people to remember him for his kindness and willingness to help,” stated Megan.

She added that the community has been supportive during this tough time.

“Community members are organising a massive braai to celebrate his life and the positive impact he made on those around him.”

Funeral arrangements for Hutchinson will begin on Monday, with further details to be announced soon.
