The operation focused on the removal of unlicensed firearms, apprehension of wanted suspects, and enforcement of liquor license compliance.

Police arrested 352 suspects during Operation Shanela in the Mamelodi policing precincts on Thursday.

The successful operation, under the leadership of Major-General Samuel Thine, District Commissioner of Tshwane, focused on key priorities, including the removal of unlicensed firearms, apprehension of wanted suspects and enforcement of liquor license compliance.

Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said this operation continued with a multi-stakeholder approach.

Van Dyk said during the first phase, Tshwane detectives apprehended 279 individuals for serious offences, including gender-based violence (73), assault to inflict grievous bodily harm (50), murder (2), armed robbery (8) and rape (5).

He added that 58 undocumented individuals were detained and are awaiting legal processes for deportation.

“Police further arrested three suspects for possession and dealing in drugs, with 38 bags containing various substances, 98 pinches of nyaope, a bag of dagga and 19 Mandrax tablets.

An undisclosed amount of cash was also found in their possession.

Three more suspects were arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes when 40 cartons and 35 packets were found in their possession.

The police searched 838 persons, and 381 vehicles, with 55 vehicles being tested to determine whether they had been stolen.

Traffic officers issued 168 Aarto infringement notices, totalling R82 950, with one person being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Two people were arrested for indecent conduct: one for urinating and the other for smoking dagga in public.

Police inspected 28 premises and eight liquor establishments.

Six outlets were closed and alcohol was confiscated for non-compliance with the Liquor Act.
