Brazilians through to knockout stages after AS FAR draw
A late equaliser from the away side forced Mamelodi Sundowns to settle for a draw.
Mamelodi Sundowns clinched their place in the knockout stages of the CAF Champions League after battling to a 1-1 draw against AS FAR at Loftus Stadium on January 20.
The match took a turn in the 12th minute when Masandwana broke the deadlock.
A foul on Lucas Ribeiro led to a well-executed free kick, which Peter Shalulile converted with a powerful header into the net.
This early goal injected confidence into the home side, who began to assert their dominance on the pitch.
Shalulile, Ribeiro, and Thapelo Morena led the charge and dominated possession while creating multiple scoring opportunities.
However, despite their attempts to extend their lead, the AS FAR goalkeeper made several crucial saves to keep the visitors in the game.
At the end of the first half, Sundowns held a 1-0 lead.
In the second stanza, Iqraam Rayners challenged the visitors’ defence on multiple occasions.
His notable chance came when he broke free from defenders but was denied a second goal by the keeper.
Despite Masandwana’s solid defence, the away team began to find their rhythm and posed a greater threat as they pushed for an equaliser.
Bafana Ba Style held firm however, just before the full-time whistle, AS FAR Rabat managed to capitalise on a lapse in concentration, equalising and forcing Sundowns to settle for a draw.
