Reflecting on this remarkable accomplishment, the Section 79 Chairperson for Community and Social Development, Councillor Rebecca Monchusi, extended her congratulations to the team.

“This milestone achievement is a testament to the team’s hard work, dedication, and passion for the beautiful game.

As they embark on this monumental task, we wish them success not only in representing South Africa but also the African continent,” she stated.

Monchusi highlighted the importance of this tournament as a unifying moment for South Africans.

She urged the public to rally behind the team and support them in their journey.

“We call on all South Africans to rally behind Mamelodi Sundowns and to cheer them on as they take on the world’s best.”

The team’s rich history, spanning over five decades, and their consistent dominance in domestic and African competitions have earned them the status of being the pride of Tshwane.

Monchusi noted that this achievement is a shining example of teamwork and perseverance.

She added that it underscores the power of sport to inspire and uplift communities.

“This moment is also a testament to the power of sports in promoting social integration and community development.

Soccer represents the dreams and aspirations of many young people across our country, who see it as a way out of social ills such as poverty and substance addictions,” she said.

“As we celebrate the team’s achievement, we also reaffirm our commitment to developing the sporting fraternity to ensure that it continues to inspire and uplift our communities.”

Chairperson Monchusi concluded her congratulatory message with a call to action.

She urged the team to embrace the responsibility of representing the entire continent.

“We trust that they will bring back the cup, not just as a symbol of victory, but as a catalyst for investment in our country’s soccer fraternity.”

She said this win will promote sports development and social and community initiatives.

Monchusi also expressed hope that Sundowns’ participation would inspire a new generation of young Africans to chase their dreams.

In December last year, Masandawana learnt of their group stage opponents during the official draw, which took place on December 5.

Bafana Ba Style were drawn in Group F and are set to face Fluminense, Borussia Dortmund, and Ulsan HD.

At the time, goalkeeper Ronwen Williams expressed what it means for the club to have qualified for this tournament.

“We are just so happy to see the name Mamelodi Sundowns up there with the best of the best, which is an amazing achievement for us.

Being part of such a prestigious tournament is a big deal.”

Williams fondly recalled the moment the team watched the draw together while camping in Morocco for their CAF Champions League match preparation and described it as a special and unifying experience.

“We are in Group F, and it’s nice that there are teams that we are familiar with, like Fluminense.”

He also highlighted the excitement of Tashreeq Matthews, a former Borussia Dortmund player, at the prospect of facing his former club.
