Lynnwood and Menlo Park residents spend days without power
Some residents have not had power since last Monday, February 17.
Residents of Menlo Park and Lynnwood have been without electricity for days, with some areas experiencing outages for up to seven days.
According to Ward 82 Councillor Siobhan Muller, 9th and 18th to 20th streets in Menlo Park have been without power for five days.
Muller said power went out on February 19 and has not returned to date.
She added that residents of Lynnwood – The Hillside have been without power since last Monday.
“The 9th and 18th to 20th streets in Menlo Park and 336 The Rand Street in Lynnwood are still without power.”
Some residents had to throw away rotten meat and other perishable food items.
Muller stated that she has escalated the issue to the regional group and regional head, but has received no response.
“Residents are being told that there is no outage when they report it, but the reality is that they are facing days without power,” Muller said.
She added that last week, when she reported the outages, she was told that there was only one cherry picker.
Stefan Swart, a 9th Street resident, said the consistent power outages are frustrating.
“It’s been days since we’ve had electricity, and it’s not just inconvenient, it’s also a health concern, especially for the elderly,” Swart said.
Swart said he had to take in a 72-year-old lady who is his neighbour, as she was unable to stay alone without electricity.
He added that they had to throw away food because it’s gone bad.
Swart said the biggest concern when there is no power is security.
He explained that power outage affects alarm systems and gate motors.
“In South Africa you just cannot live without electricity,” he said.
“We have lodged several complaints to Tshwane but nothing has been done.”
According to Swart, the excuse they are getting from Tshwane “is that it’s load-shedding or it’s raining and that they cannot come out”.
