Prolonged water leak repair delay due to wrong address – Tshwane
Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo attributed the delay to an incorrect address provided during the initial report.
A water leak at Early Street in the north of Pretoria reported in 2024 has finally been repaired after months of delays.
Despite numerous follow-ups on the reported water leak since October 18 last year, the issue remained unresolved until February this year.
Tshwane said an incorrect address led to the long wait for repairs.
Ward 2 councillor Quentin Meyer said it is unacceptable for residents to report an issue and for the metro to take so long before attending to the repair on February 27.
“This is simply unacceptable. We have been reporting this issue repeatedly, and despite our efforts, the metro took too long to respond.
“Residents had to endure this for five months. This delay should not happen when we are talking about water wastage and critical infrastructure,” said Meyer.
He said that while he understands the challenges of old infrastructure, the delay in addressing such leaks is concerning.
He emphasised the need for better co-ordination between the metro and its departments to prevent similar issues from arising again.
“It’s the community that suffers when repairs take this long. The city must address these challenges more effectively in future.
“We are grateful the leak is finally fixed, but the lack of urgency from the metro is disappointing. It felt like we are being ignored,” said resident Henry Booysens.

Mashigo said the reference number provided by residents was linked to another address two streets away from Early Street.
“Upon inspection, no leak was found at the provided location, which delayed the repair at the correct address,” said Mashigo.
Despite the residents’ frustration, the metro assured residents it remains committed to addressing water leaks as they occur.
Mashigo acknowledged that Pretoria North faces a particularly high volume of infrastructure issues due to its ageing pipelines but stressed that all efforts would be made to address them immediately.
