Water pipe replacement under way in Sinoville

The metro’s ability to replace the remaining infrastructure depends on the availability of the budget.

The Tshwane metro has implemented a pipe replacement programme to address deteriorating infrastructure in Sinoville, north of Pretoria.

Residents of Sinoville, Wonderboom South, and Annlin raised concerns over the persistent water leaks in their neighbourhoods.

Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said 60% of Sinoville’s water infrastructure has already been replaced through this programme.

Some residents claimed the leaks have gone unrepaired for months.

The growing number of leaks in the area has caused frustration among the community, who believe the Tshwane metro is not doing enough to address the issue on time.

Water leaks have persisted for months in Sinoville.

Resident Sarie Velthuizen shared her frustration regarding the recurring leaks in her neighbourhood.

“On the corner of Aldo [Street] and Blyde Avenue, water constantly leaks.

“Tshwane usually takes two weeks to fix it, but the repairs only last for about a week before it starts leaking again,” explained Velthuizen.

Velthuizen added that there has been a leak on the sidewalks for several months. She claimed the metro only addressed the leaks in the street and neglected the ones on the sidewalk.

Similar issues have been reported in Wonderboom South.

Residents driving down Steve Biko Road have noted numerous water leaks, with two large leaks identified on Naude and Meyer streets.

These leaks, according to residents, have persisted for months, despite multiple times.

“They fix the leaks, and they are okay for about a week, but then they start again. It’s frustrating,” said Velthuizen.

Mashigo said the metro attends to all water leaks according to its norms and standards, which dictate that repairs should be completed within 48 hours of being reported.

However, residents feel that this timeline is rarely met, with some leaks taking weeks or months to be repaired.

Mashigo assured that all the reported leaks were attended to within the required timeframe.

He acknowledged that some leaks are due to the ageing water infrastructure in Sinoville and the surrounding areas.

The metro’s ability to replace the remaining infrastructure depends on the availability of the budget.

Mashigo stated that no property damage had been reported about the leaks aside from trenches left behind after repairs, which have been backfilled.

He said the metro continues to deploy six plumber teams across the 12 wards in Region 2.

Residents are encouraged to report water leaks through the metro’s customer care centres.
