Sosh substation upgrades ahead of schedule

The upgrades include replacing the switch gears which will allow the electrical system to isolate individual outages to specific areas.

Following years of unreliable energy supply that has affected the community of Soshanguve, the Tshwane metro has announced that the repair to the 1A substation will be completed by the end of the month.

Efforts to upgrade the substation began at the end of 2024 to address ongoing outages in Soshanguve and Winterveldt.

Tshwane MMC for Utility Services Frans Boshielo said the original deadline for completion was set for April.

“The completion of this substation, ahead of schedule, is a demonstration that our priorities are not just words but find expression in our actions,” said Boshielo.

He said the refurbishment at 1A includes replacing non-functioning switchgears that would continuously trip resulting in larger than expected outage areas.

“The substation had over the years battled to carry the growing electricity demand necessitating the need for scheduled load reduction to be implemented in the area to preserve the system’s stability.”

Boshielo said that the newly installed switchgears will allow the electrical system to isolate individual outages to specific areas including block BB, DD, JJ, FF, GG and Tswaing, block NN and parts of Winterveldt.

He said the long-term energy plan for the area remains the completion of refurbishments to JJ Substation.

“The service delivery objective of ensuring reliable electricity supply to residents forms part of the multi-party government’s commitment to boosting infrastructure development.”
