Annual pumpkin festival remains a local favourite
Goliat van Gat is a festival that celebrates giant vegetables and community spirit.

The 21st annual Goliat van Gat Pumpkin Festival, held on March 15 at the Old Motor Club, saw Cornelis Bester’s pumpkin, Grietjie, crowned the winner, weighing in at an impressive 445kg. Despite facing significant challenges during the growing season, including a prolonged heatwave followed by heavy rainfall, Bester’s dedication paid off, securing him first place.
The festival, a local favourite, featured a variety of competitions, including the largest, most beautiful, and ugliest pumpkin categories. This year, the festival also saw Selah the Squash take home the award for the Biggest Vegetable, weighing in at a surprising 671kg, 16kg heavier than initially measured. Beyond the giant pumpkins, the festival offered family-friendly activities, including the popular pumpkin seed spitting competition and the energetic pumpkin running contest.
Lee-Ann van Zyl and Arnoldus Kotze emerged victorious in the women’s and men’s divisions of the running competition, adding to the day’s festive atmosphere.

Bester, a four-time participant, explained the difficulties he encountered while growing Grietjie. “This season was particularly tough,” he said, citing the extreme weather conditions that nearly led to the pumpkin’s demise. He expressed gratitude for the community support, particularly those who donated borehole water during the drought, crucial for Grietjie’s development.
While Grietjie’s weight was notable, it didn’t surpass the 730.80kg record set by Bella in 2024. However, the festival’s emphasis remained on community and charity. All pumpkins entered, including Grietjie, will be donated to a local welfare organisation for distribution among those in need, ensuring the festival’s impact extends beyond the day’s festivities.
The Goliat van Gat Pumpkin Festival continues to be a highlight for Pretoria residents, combining agricultural prowess with community spirit and charitable giving.
