Police arrest six after discovery of guns, ammo in taxi
Six suspects were arrested in Atteridgeville and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Six suspects were arrested in Atteridgeville on March 17 after being found in possession of unlicensed firearms and 30 rounds of ammunition.
The police were busy with their duties when they noticed a suspicious white Toyota Quantum with six occupants, all men, driving in the area.
Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said following tactical procedures, the officers stopped the vehicle and instructed the occupants to get off and lie on the ground.
“Upon searching the vehicle, the officers discovered two firearms with 26 rounds of ammunition hidden under the rear seats.”
Van Dyk said four extra rounds of ammunition were found inside a jersey within the vehicle.
He said with preliminary investigations done on the scene; it was found that the serial numbers on the firearms had been filed off.
According to Van Dyk, the investigation remains ongoing to determine whether the suspects can be linked to other criminal activities.
“The recovered firearms will undergo forensic analysis to establish whether they were used in any previous crimes,” he said.
Major-General Samuel Thine commended the officers for their attentiveness and outstanding work in ensuring community safety.
