Ward 1 residents urged to Adopt-a-Pothole
Stakeholders believe the initiative will be stronger if more community members become involved in the joint project.
Residents and businesses in Ward 1 are encouraged to adopt a pothole in the area.
The call comes after a recent pothole-filling project in and around Mountain View and Capital Park.
Adopt-a-Pothole puts the onus on communities to address the ignored potholes in their areas.
Given the constant wet weather in recent weeks, potholes are becoming a more common hindrance than usual for motorists.
The joint initiative was started by ward councillor Leon Kruyshaar in collaboration with the metro, CPF, residents and the private business sector.
On March 14, workers from the metro, private companies and Ward 1 residents tackled some of the notorious streets in the area known for large amounts of potholes.
“We’re here assisting the team, assisting the city. Sometimes they have asphalt, sometimes they don’t.”
Kruyshaar said sometimes they provide the asphalt from their budget.
“We can fix a lot more if we have the staff to fix it,” he said.
Potholes on Bremer Street, at the corner of Henry Nourse and Hendriks streets and Eskia Mphahlele Drive were fixed.
“That’s what we’ll keep doing in partnership with the city, private residents and companies. We can get this pothole issue sorted in the ward. There’s a lot more that is going to happen if more members of the public get involved,” Kruyshaar said.
He added that the team will be back this week to tackle Moot Street and surrounding areas as well.
Ward 1 is not the first area in recent weeks to take this approach, as, AfriForum’s North of the Mountain (Noord van die Berg) branch R250 Fix a Pothole Challenge has fixed 33 potholes.
