Exhibition weaves a tale
The exhibit contains over a hundred works from nearly 40 different artists.
The Pretoria Weavers’ Guild (PWG) recently unveiled their new exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum consisting of 190 pieces crafted by 39 different artists.
The exhibition began on March 31 and closes on May 25 and throughout residents have the opportunity to attend weekend demonstrations, guild meetings and spinning meetings.
The exhibition, titled, Weave For Your Life is a collaboration between PWG, the Johannesburg Weavers and Spinners Guild.
Chairperson of the PWG Anette Matthews said she believes weaving is a hobby/craft that can bring a lot of inner peace and satisfaction to the weaver.
“To see and appreciate what weaving is and how important it is to each and every one of us in our daily lives, without weaving, we would not have jeans, shirts, etc. A large percentage of our clothes are woven,” Matthews said.
The PWG is a non-profit for weavers, spinners and felters where they get together and get inspiration from, and share ideas, with, other guild members.
The PWG was founded in 1951 by a group of weavers who wanted to make an official organisation.
“We weave, spin and felt and some of our members also teach those crafts,” Matthews said.
October is marked for the PWG’s next big biennial event which is a Fibre Breakaway.
Participants are taught some aspects of weaving, spinning and felting.
This breakaway spans four days, and the public can receive more details by emailing the guild at ptaweaversguild@gmail.com.
“I would like to thank the Pretoria Art Museum for the chance to yet again hold our biennial exhibition at the museum. The curator, Hannelie du Plessis, has done a wonderful job of curating the exhibition. We have had a 22-year association with the Pretoria Art Museum,” Matthews said.
