Light snow is expected in SA – will Pretoria feel the chill?

The weather services warned that light snow is expected in parts of South Africa. Will Pretoria feel the chill?

Chilly weather is sweeping across parts of South Africa this week, with forecasters warning of possible light snow over the Lesotho mountain peaks and stormy conditions moving through several provinces — but will Pretoria be among those feeling the freeze?

Vox Weather forecaster Michelle du Plessis said a strong upper-air trough could potentially cut off and develop into a cut-off low on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Heavy rain is expected in KwaZulu-Natal tomorrow (around 50mm over the central, western, and southern parts, and more than 100mm along the southern coast, which could lead to flooding) and along the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape.”

Du Plessis added that it will then be very cold around Lesotho and the surrounding areas in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Free State, with freezing levels dropping low enough for snow late Tuesday night and Wednesday in Lesotho.

“By Friday, it will be cool (temperatures below 20°C) and cloudy, with a few light rain showers.”
