Roads barricaded as furious residents protest weeks of power outages

Centurion residents barricaded major roads in a mass protest over weeks-long power outages, vowing militant action.

Roads in Centurion were barricaded on Monday morning as part of a mass protest by residents over ongoing power outages that have left the community in darkness for several weeks.

The protest action began late on Sunday evening, with residents burning tyres along the R101 highway, at the Rooihuiskraal interchange, Samrand Avenue, and the N14.

In a flyer circulated ahead of the shutdown, the organisers threatened that the streets will burn with our fury.

“We will bring traffic to a standstill until our demands are met. No more meetings, no more empty promises — only militant action will force this corrupt municipality to listen, the message read.

The flyer also declared:The revolution starts now.”

“If the mayor and his cronies think they can ignore us, they are mistaken. We will relentlessly escalate road blockades, stage sit-ins at municipal offices, and expose this criminal negligence nationwide.”

This comes after parts of Centurion have been without electricity for nearly two weeks following an explosion that caused significant damage to the Brakfontein substation.

The affected areas included Rooihuiskraal, Heuweloord, Monavoni, Amberfield, Eldoraigne, Celtisdal and Wierdapark.

On Sunday, the City of Tshwane reported progress in restoring power.

MMC for Utility Services, Frans Boshielo, announced that power has been successfully restored to Rooihuiskraal North and Amberfield 1 and 2.

He attributed the progress to thededicated and hardworking technicianswho have been working tirelessly to resolve the issue caused by extensive fire damage at the substation.

“And once more, I would like to thank you for your patience during this challenging time and the other areas that are still outstanding will be restored very soon,he said
