Three arrested in Sunnyside for public violence
A group of residents attempted to stop police from conducting an arrest.
Three foreign nationals were arrested in Sunnyside on April 16 for public violence and other charges after interrupting police work.
The incident occurred when patrollers in Sunnyside, conducting their duties, arrested a male suspect who was also a foreign national.
Spokesperson, Brigadier Brenda Muridili, says the officers were part of Operation Paseka, conducting operations in the Tshwane District at the time, and as they left with the suspect, they were intercepted.
“It is reported that Sunnyside members on patrol had arrested an illegal foreigner and, as they were about to drive away, a group of Ethiopian nationals blocked the police vehicle,” Muridili said.
When police backup arrived, the crowd began throwing rocks at them.
“Public order police were called for backup and they managed to quell the crowd by firing rubber bullets. Members arrested three suspects for public violence as well as for assaulting a police official and two traffic wardens,” Muridili said.
The suspects arrested are expected to appear in court in due course.
