Stakeholders clean up park where an officer was shot
Over 4 500 square metres of grass were cut to make the park safer.
AfriForum and ADT recently cleaned up a park in Danville, west of Pretoria, following the shooting of a security officer.
The shooting took place on March 21, whereby an assailant shot and wounded the officer on duty, inspiring AfriForum to hold this clean-up against crime.
Pretoria West AfriForum members took to the park on Jan Ellis Avenue in Danville on April 15, to tackle the tall grass in the area that often assists criminals.
“There are so many messages and calls from the community to say thank you that everything looks so neat again. It is a privilege for us that we were able to make a difference in the community,” said Francois Oberholzer, chairperson of AfriForum Pretoria West.
“We still have a lot of grass that needs to be cut to make the area safer again. We are currently busy cutting the grass in the park in Vrolike-lied Place in Elandspoort, but the rain is delaying the project a bit,” Oberholzer added.
The nearby community and residents of several nursing homes in Danville complained about the long grass in the park on Jan Ellis Avenue, saying that they could no longer walk through the park to church.
The long grass had become a hiding place for criminals, which posed a danger to the community, especially the elderly.
The park is about 7 648 square metres; 4 543 square metres of grass were cut.
