Tshwane focuses on reticulation to stabilise power supply in Soshanguve

Works in Blocks BB and DD is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

The Tshwane metro on April 17 vowed that it had ramped up efforts to stabilise electricity supply in Soshanguve through an intensive power cable reticulation project aimed at tackling long-standing outages and infrastructure failures in the area.

This comes after Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya, accompanied by MMC for Utility Services Frans Boshielo, visited Blocks BB and DD to inspect ongoing work being carried out by the metro’s Department of Electricity and Energy in the area.

The project involves the installation of 1 200m of underground electricity cables from the recently upgraded IA substation of these high-demand blocks.

According to Moya, the initiative is a critical intervention in ensuring more reliable electricity for thousands of households in one of the metro’s worst-affected regions.

“We are accelerating this reticulation phase because our residents deserve a stable, consistent electricity supply.

“This is not just about infrastructure; it’s about restoring dignity and supporting economic activity in Soshanguve,” said Moya.

The reticulation project is designed to localise and limit faults by ensuring that electrical issues can be isolated to specific areas, avoiding the broad-scale outages that have plagued Soshanguve in recent months.

“Once these new cables are connected and energised, they will reduce the likelihood of widespread power outages, as faults can now be managed more efficiently.”

This reticulation phase follows the successful upgrade of the IA Substation, completed well ahead of its April 2025 deadline.

The substation work included the installation of new switchgears and cables, a development that has already led to noticeable improvements to the area’s supply stability.

Work in Blocks BB and DD is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

“As such, residents have begun to experience fewer outages, a clear indication that the improvements are yielding results.

“The ongoing reticulation phase will further reinforce these gains, with completion expected by the end of this month.”

She said work is also being done to upgrade and reinstall infrastructure at the W Substation.

The metro urged residents to continue reporting faults and working with technicians to ensure a more responsive, accountable electricity network.
