Residents encouraged to get vaccine ahead of flu season
The vaccine offers the best defence against the flu and its potentially serious consequences and can reduce the spread of germs to others.
The Tshwane metro has urged residents to get vaccinated against the influenza virus as the flu season approaches.
MMC for Health, Tshegofatso Mashabela, emphasised the importance of the vaccine.
She said it is a critical tool for safeguarding public health and ensuring the well-being of all residents.
“It is advisable for residents to get vaccinated against the influenza virus,” she said.
Mashabela explained the vaccine significantly lowers the risk of flu-related illness, hospitalisation, and even death.
“It is particularly vital for vulnerable individuals, including pregnant women, people living with HIV, and those with chronic conditions such as diabetes, lung disease, heart disease, tuberculosis, kidney disease, or obesity.”
She added that it is also important for adults aged 65 years and older, as well as children younger than two years, to receive the vaccine.
However, Mashabela assured residents the flu vaccine is available to anyone who requests it.
“By getting vaccinated, residents protect themselves but also reduce the overall number of flu cases, thereby alleviating the burden on healthcare facilities.”
The MMC said this will ensure that medical professionals focus on treating other critical conditions and emergencies.
“High vaccination rates contribute to herd immunity, which helps to reduce the overall prevalence of the flu and protects those who are most at risk.”
She encouraged residents to note that protection against the flu develops within 10 days after vaccination.
Mashabela also emphasised that annual vaccination is necessary, as flu viruses change over time and the protection does not last from one year to the next.
“I would like to encourage everyone to get the flu vaccine as soon as possible,” she said.
She urged residents to visit their nearest health facility to get vaccinated, as the vaccines are available at all Tshwane Health Care Facilities.
“Together, we can protect our community and ensure a healthier flu season for all.”
