Anti-crime operations sweep up 330 suspects in parts of Tshwane
The multiple targeted operations were executed in specific areas in the Tshwane district.
More than 330 suspects were apprehended for various offences and liquor establishments were shut down during police operations in Akasia, Soshanguve and Mamelodi on May 1.
The criminal sweep was conducted under the command of Tshwane District Commissioner, Major-General Samuel Thine.
The multiple operations focused on a crime clampdown by conducting targeted operations in specific areas across the district.
SAPS spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said the operations were successful as a result of the effort and co-ordination by a multidisciplinary law enforcement team.
“Members of the Department of Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and the Tshwane Metro Police Department executed this co-ordinated operation.”
He said these efforts led to the arrest of 336 suspects for a range of offences and strengthened the SAPS’s commitment to curbing crime in high-risk areas.
“The operation also included the continued apprehension of wanted individuals, an increased visible policing presence through the strategic deployment of officers and resources, and the enforcement of liquor regulations in high-risk areas.”
Van Dyk said Tshwane detectives arrested 280 suspects for various offences, including gender-based violence (72), murder (9), attempted murder (2), armed robbery (9), rape (3), and five for other serious crimes.
“Two operational teams conducted compliance inspections and enforcement actions in Akasia, Soshanguve, and Mamelodi.”
He said these efforts resulted in the detention of 29 undocumented individuals, who are currently undergoing legal processes related to deportation.
“A total of 316 individuals and 166 vehicles were searched during the operation.”
He added that liquor compliance inspections were conducted at 38 establishments, of which seven were shut down for non-compliance with the Liquor Act. All alcohol was confiscated.
He said police conducted searches and patrols at 60 identified premises and known crime hotspots, which led to eight arrests for drug possession, and the confiscation of 76 bags containing various illicit substances.
“Nine individuals were fined and arrested for public drinking, one person for public indecency, and one driver for driving under the influence of alcohol.”
Van Dyk said Major-General Samuel Thine expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders for their continued commitment to executing the operations.
