Power outage disrupts traffic on Pretoria Road, Cussonia Avenue

A fault at the Waltloo substation has knocked out traffic lights on key roads, causing major delays and concern among drivers.

A power outage at the Waltloo substation has left several traffic lights out of service along Pretoria Road and Cussonia Avenue in the east of Pretoria, sparking concern among motorists.

The outage, which has impacted intersections on Pretoria Road, has caused severe traffic congestion during the morning rush and led to frustration.

The intersection of Meiring Naude Road and Cussonia Avenue next to the Botanical Gardens is also affected.

Ward 46 councillor Pieter van Heerden confirmed that a power failure affecting the Brummeria and Silverton areas is responsible for the malfunctioning traffic lights.

“The teams have been alerted and are working on restoring power,” said Van Heerden, adding that once power is restored, the traffic signals should resume normal operation.

He further explained that the issue stems from a trip on the 132kV Line 1 between Eland and Waltloo substations, which has also affected the Pyramid, Pumulani, Koedoespoort, and Waltloo substations.

“Teams are attending to the fault, but we do not yet have an estimated time for repairs,” Van Heerden said.

The busy intersection of Cussonia Avenue and Stanza Bopape Street, currently out of service, has raised concern among motorists, who fear a repeat of previous acts of vandalism that left the traffic lights non-functional for over eight months.

The traffic lights near the Pretoria Botanical Gardens were out of service for prolonged periods last year, leading to increased congestion and delays during peak hours, particularly for those travelling to and from Silverton and Meyerspark.

Last year, Van Heerden said the issue with the traffic lights being out for months was caused by vandalism and theft of cables.

He previously said the traffic lights needed to be connected to a safer place.
