Metro battles to restore power supply in the north

A specific timeline could not be provided for when full restoration could be expected.

Communities in Theresapark, Ninapark, Hesteapark, Winternest and other surrounding areas continue to face power outages for almost a week after a fire and vandalism incident severely damaged infrastructure at the Theresapark Secondary Substation.

According to Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo, the damage, sparked by a fire caused by cable theft and vandalism on May 1, led to the burning of jumper cables and a termination failure.

This has left portions of the north of Pretoria in darkness for extended periods despite the efforts of metro technicians to repair the damage.

Mashigo said while power has been restored to areas such as Clarina, Dorandia, Florauna, and Eldorette, other communities remain without electricity as the team works to energise the remaining areas gradually.

“To accelerate the restoration process, the regional office has secured additional resources from other regions to support the repair work process,” said Mashigo.

However, many residents have expressed growing frustration over the prolonged blackout.

The metro has apologised for the inconvenience and assured residents that work is ongoing.

“The team will continue to gradually restore power supply to the areas that are still affected as and when progress is made with the repairs,” said Bokaba.

The metro has not provided a specific timeline for when full restoration can be expected.

Community leader Dana Wannenburg said the electricity teams will conduct urgent repair work on the BV line to the affected areas, and the substation might be switched off to ensure smooth restoration.

“The team will repair the stolen infrastructure and work on the critical maintenance on the BV line.

“We request the community’s patience and understanding during this time. These repairs are essential to restore and secure the electricity supply,” said Wannenburg.
