Police arrests 280 in weekend operation
Among the arrests, a suspect was found with an illegal firearm, previously reported stolen in Rietgat.
Police in Tshwane executed a high-impact crime-combating initiative through Operation Shanela on May 17, targeting policing precincts of Ekangala and Bronkhorstspruit.
The operation was carried out by a multi-disciplinary law enforcement comprising various departments such as SAPS, Home Affairs, metro police, Gauteng Traffic police, Gauteng Traffic wardens and CPF from the respective stations.

According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, 289 suspects were arrested for various offences.
“This success is attributed to focused deployment strategies and intensified law enforcement visibility, with specific attention given to liquor compliance and the apprehension of wanted suspects,” he said.
He said that detectives within the Tshwane District were responsible for 226 of these arrests.
“These included, 75 suspects arrested for gender-based violence-related offences, 4 for kidnapping, 6 for intimidation, 4 for attempted murder, 15 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and 1 for rape,” Van Dyk said.
He said a roadblock in Ekangala, along with mobile tactical teams throughout the area, resulted in the detention of 15 undocumented foreign nationals.
Van Dyk said these individuals are being processed by immigration authorities for deportation.
Law enforcement members searched 508 individuals and 281 vehicles.
“This led to 27 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol,” he said.
Additional targeted patrols of 11 identified hotspots resulted in 14 arrests and fines for public drinking.
“One suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm. The weapon, previously reported stolen in Rietgat, will undergo forensic testing to determine whether it was used in any other criminal activity,” he said.
The suspect is under investigation for potential links to other offences.
Traffic law enforcement officers issued 81 Aarto infringement notices, amounting to R47 850 in fines for various road traffic violations.
He said liquor inspections were conducted at 20 establishments. Three premises were closed, and alcohol was confiscated.
