Possible water disruptions for parts of Tshwane
Tshwane faces a serious water supply risk as Rand Water begins major maintenance. Lynnwood residents could be hit hard, with limited reserves and warnings from local councilor.
The Tshwane metro has issued a stark warning to residents as Rand Water prepares for critical maintenance that could severely disrupt water supply between May 29 and June 3.
Rand Water is scheduled to perform major work on its Mapleton and Palmiet booster pumping stations.
The maintenance includes the connection of a newly constructed pipeline at the Mapleton Booster Station, which will require a full pumping shutdown from May 29 to June 2.
Following that, the Palmiet System will be partially shut down for 10 hours to allow for inspection and cleaning of the Klipriviersberg Master Reservoir on June 3.
Here are some of the reservoirs affected:
-Corobrik Plant
-Carina Street Reservoir
-Garsfontein Reservoir
-Eersterust Reservoir
-Monument Park Reservoir
-Waterkloof East Reservoir
-Waterkloof Ridge Reservoir
-Constantia Park Reservoir
-Erasmusrand Reservoir
-Elardus Park Reservoir
-Kilner Park Reservoir
-Koedoesnek LL Reservoir
-Magalieskruin Reservoir
-Mamelodi R1 Reservoir
-Mamelodi R2 Reservoir
-Montana Reservoir
-Moreleta Reservoir
-Murrayfield Reservoir
-Parkmore HL Reservoir
-Parkmore LL Reservoir
These sites may experience low pressure or complete supply interruption during the maintenance period.
Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo confirmed that Tshwane had been notified in advance by Rand Water and said the metro is taking steps to prepare.
“We are working to fill affected reservoirs to over 80% capacity before the maintenance begins,” said Mashigo.
“Our teams are monitoring the situation, and roaming water tankers will be dispatched if necessary.”
Mashigo reminded residents to always adhere to the following water conservation measures:
• Do not water or irrigate gardens with hosepipes or sprinkler systems between 06:00 and 18:00
• Do not wash vehicles with hosepipes
• Do not fill swimming pools
• Use a dual-flush toilet cistern
• Use a broom instead of a hosepipe when cleaning driveways or patios
• Collect rainwater to reuse in the garden or wash the car
• Cover the swimming pool to reduce water evaporation
• Take a short shower rather than a bath
• Close a running tap while brushing teeth or shaving
• Regularly check toilets and taps for leaks
Mashigo advised residents to store clean water in advance and follow updates from the City of Tshwane through its website and official social media channels.
He said the metro apologises for any inconvenience and assures residents that technicians will be working throughout the shutdown to maintain essential water operations wherever possible.
Ward 82 Councillor Siobhan Muller has raised concerns about the readiness of local infrastructure, saying that the Lynnwood reservoir is only at 60% capacity.
She said it is far below the target required to sustain demand during the upcoming shutdown.
“There is going to be a huge problem with the capacity of the Lynnwood reservoir being at 60% when this water outage hits,” Muller said.
