Noweto stations indicate an increase in contact crimes

No stations from the far north featured in the province’s top 30 this quarter.

Police stations in Noweto have shown decreases in contact crimes in the fourth quarterly 2024/25 crime stats released by police minister Senzo Mchunu on May 23.

The statistics record several crimes reported to police stations from January to March.

Contact crimes, which include offences like murder, sexual assault, and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, saw notable shifts in the north of Pretoria.

Soshanguve

The Soshanguve SAPS reported a decrease in contact crimes of 4.7%, with attempted murder cases increasing by 12 counts to 27 cases.

Assault with intent to cause GBH increased by 5.8% (103 cases up to 109), and cases of common assault decreased by 12.9% (186 to 162).

Common robberies decreased by seven counts (now 29) and murder cases increased by five counts (now 14) while sexual offences decreased by four (now 25).

Three less rape cases (now 22) were reported this quarter.

Carjackings decreased by 13 counts, with 21 cases reported, and robberies at residential premises increased by 10 counts to 25 cases reported.

Theft of a motor vehicle or motorcycle increased by one count for a total of 10 cases reported.

Burglary at residential premises increased by 34.6% (107 to 144), and detected driving under the influence (DUI) increased by 52.5%.

Ga-Rankuwa

Contact crimes saw a decrease of 12.1% this quarter.

Murder counts increased by 10, with 12 cases being reported, and sexual offences decreased by one count, as 20 cases were reported.

A total of 94 cases of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) were reported, and common assault cases decreased by 23% (from 139 to 107).

Common robberies decreased by eight counts, with 16 cases reported this quarter, and robberies with aggravating circumstances decreased by 13.8% (109 cases down to 94).

Sixteen rape cases were reported and four cases of sexual offences were reported.

Carjackings increased by 15 counts from 13 cases to 28, and 16 robberies at residential premises took place, while 11 robberies at non-residential premises were recorded.

Malicious damage to property cases decreased by 14 counts (78 to 64).

Seventeen cases of burglary at non-residential premises were recorded, and there was a decrease of 13 cases at residential premises, with 68 cases.

Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases increased by two counts.

Police detected three counts of illegal firearms and ammunition possession compared to one last quarter.

Temba

Temba police station reported a decrease of 16.2 % in contact crimes.

Robberies with aggravating circumstances decreased by 4.3% (163 to 156 cases), and common assault cases decreased by 26.3% (334 to 246).

Assault with intent to cause GBH cases went down by 15.3% (177 to 150) and rape cases remained the same with 34 cases reported.

Five more counts of sexual assault were recorded in this quarter, bringing the total to 10.

Carjackings increased by six cases to 21, and robberies at non-residential premises decreased by two to 11 cases.

Robberies at residential premises decreased by five to 24.

One count of arson was reported and 76 malicious damage to property cases, a 22.4% decrease from last year.

Burglary at non-residential premises increased by 17 counts, a 41.5% increase from the previous quarter and at residential places decreased by 17.9 % (173 to 142).

Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases decreased by five counts, down to 15, and theft out of vehicles increased by 19 counts, with 49 cases reported.

Only 17 illegal firearm and ammunition possession crimes were reported, and 14 counts of DUI were recorded from the 70 in the last quarter.
