Willow Road water leak nears complete restoration
Residents can expect water to return gradually, and are urged to use water sparingly so that the supply can also reach people living in higher-lying areas.
Pretoria Central residents can expect relief from their water struggles as the Tshwane metro recently announced that the pipe repairs are almost done.
On May 26, parts of the CBD, Sunnyside, Arcadia and Eastwood were hit with water shortages as the metro said a pipe was leaking on Willow Road.
Teams were digging trenches to get to the leakage of the 400mm HDPE pipe.
The team had to first close and isolate the 375mm steel pipe chamber next to Unisa before pumping water out from the chamber to enable them to assess the leakage.
On May 27, the metro said via a statement that the repairs were complete, though water is still to be used sparingly.
“Customers are urged to exercise patience during the pumping period as the network takes time to fully recover. The city is pleading with residents in the low-lying areas to use water sparingly when the supply is restored, to allow the system to reach a level at which high-lying areas can get a supply. The city apologises for the inconvenience caused by this unplanned water supply interruption,” the statement read.
During a site visit at the site where the repairs were ongoing, MMC for Utilities and Services Frans Boshielo said that communities can expect water in “no time”.
“Our plumbers have done well, and they’ve fixed the pipe. The community can now have water within no time. We apologise for the inconvenience that’s been caused by this major pipe leak,” Boshielo said.
