48-hours reservoir maintenance expected in far east

The Tshwane metro has informed residents in Eersterust and surrounding areas of rescheduled water supply interruptions due to reservoir maintenance.

The upgrading work on the bulk water system will take place on June 25 and 26.

According to Tshwane, the work entails effecting repairs on a leaking PRV chamber, replacing of aged pipeline and installing an altitude valve to regulate water levels and flow to the reservoir.

“The upgrading work was initially scheduled to take place on May 6–7. However, it was postponed to May 13–14, which was also cancelled. On both occasions, the city was compelled to cancel due to the challenges experienced with the contractor on the measurements of the fittings to be installed, and the failed quality inspection as per the city’s standards on fittings’ coating material,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

He said the unavoidable work, which will help with water loss and suitable control of the reservoir, will commence at 07:00 on Wednesday and is expected to last for 48 hours.

The following areas will be affected:

– Derdepoort 326-JR
– Derdepoort Park Ext 2
– Despatch
– Eersterust
– Eersterust Ext 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6
– Hartebeespoort 328-JR
– Jan Niemand Park
– Mamelodi Ext 13
– Silvertondale
– Silvertondale Ext 1 and 2
– Waltloo

Mashigo said the city will try to minimise the impact of the water supply interruption. He urged residents to store enough water for household purposes during this period of interruption.

In addition, he said water tankers will be available to service the affected areas.

Residents are urged to adhere to the following water-conservation measures as part of their normal lifestyle:

– Do not water or irrigate gardens with hosepipes or sprinkler systems between 06:00 and 18:00.

– Do not wash vehicles with hosepipes.

– Do not fill swimming pools.

– Using grey water to water gardens and flush toilets.

– Report water leaks, burst pipes and all incidents where water is wasted.

Residents are also encouraged to make water conservation part of their everyday lives by following the water-saving tips:

– Install a low-flow shower head and tap aerators where possible.

– Use a dual-flush toilet cistern.

– Plant indigenous or drought-resistant shrubs in the garden.

– Use a broom instead of a hosepipe when cleaning driveways or patios.

– Collect rainwater to reuse in the garden or wash the car.

– Cover the swimming pool to reduce water evaporation.

– Take a short shower rather than a bath.

– Close a running tap while brushing teeth or shaving.

– Regularly check toilets and taps for leaks.
