Pretoria cyclist motivated by renewed sense of optimism at each stop
Renee Kruger is confident that his message of hope is being received well by the communities he passes through. He has covered 350km of his 900km journey so far.
A 47-year-old cyclist from Eersterust is staying true to his mission of inspiration as he continues on his 900km long cycle ride from Pretoria to the Northern Cape.
Renee Kruger began his journey to the Northern Cape on July 11, and is determined to raise awareness for mental health, GBV, anti-bullying, and other social ills.
Despite the physical and mental demands of cycling many kilometres a day, the act of reaching each daily stop provides a fresh surge of energy and reinforces his determination to continue raising awareness of the causes he champions.
He has travelled 350km of his journey so far, and says he remains ‘remarkably optimistic’, sharing that his message of hope is being welcomed with open arms along his journey.
Kruger has made stops in several communities, spreading awareness on GBV and its implications since he started from Eersterust.
“Knowing that I’m leaving even one person with a renewed sense of hope at each stop is what motivates me to get back on the bike every morning, even when my legs are burning,” he says.

Kruger says his goal was to cover at least 100km each day.
“I believe I have done really well so far. My mission remains unwavering, and I think people are receiving the message positively.”
He shares that the physical demands of the ride are immense, but the human connections that he makes along the journey truly fuel his spirit.
“People are excited and encouraged.
“They heard my message that there is hope, and they don’t have to give up,” he says.
He states that he is finding that his journey is not just about covering kilometres, but also igniting a spark of hope in each community that he passes through.
“When I see the hope light up in people’s eyes when I share a few words, that is all the motivation I need to keep going,” he says.
He says he believes that even the smallest change one makes in someone else’s life can make a big difference.

He shares that the challenges he is facing on his journey include riding around trucks and on hills.
“The large trucks on the road are a challenge because some drivers are impatient and others pass too closely,” he explains.
However, he mentions that he is taking precautions to minimise risks.
“Romano, my brother, is driving behind me to ensure that the trucks don’t push me off the road.”
Kruger expresses his gratitude to everyone who is supporting his journey to inspire hope and uplift communities.
“Thank you to everyone who is supporting me on this journey, to everyone who listens when we share messages of hope, and to all those who cheer us on as we pass by.”

Viewers and supporters following his journey shared encouraging messages on social media, motivating him to keep going.
One viewer from Potchefstroom, where Kruger made a stop, shared that she hopes he will reach other young people and provide them with the same uplifting experience she had.
“Whenever your body feels like giving in, remember that there are young people out there who are eager for the encouragement and hope you shared with us.
“They are waiting for you to connect with them and share your messages of hope. You are the answer to other people’s prayers,” she said.
