Fake ID syndicate busted in north of Pretoria raid, two arrested

An alleged document fraud syndicate operating in Pretoria North was exposed after more than 40 fake IDs, passports, and certificates were seized during a police raid in Soshanguve.

Among other documents, more than 40 IDs were recently discovered during a crime tackling operation in the north of Pretoria.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Amanda van Wyk, several fake documents were found during operations in Soshanguve last week.

“Last week, through operation Cyclone II, the SAPS carried out intelligence-led operations and dismantled an organised crime syndicate in Soshanguve,” she said.

She said police arrested two suspects and seized several fake documents, certificates, and electronic equipment during two separate operations on July 23.

“These arrests and seizures highlight the police’s commitment in targeting organised crime and document fraud,” she said.

She said among the recovered items were:
– 42 green South African identity books
– Six ID smart cards
– Passports
– Drivers licence cards
– SIM cards from different networks
– Umalusi national senior certificates
– Motor vehicle licence disks.

There were also laptops, printers, external hard drives, electronic equipment, and several other items.

Van Wyk said operation Cyclone II focuses on tackling crime in the north of Tshwane, particularly Soshanguve, Jukulyn, Mabopane, and Hammanskraal,” she said.

She emphasised the roles that were played by various units in the apprehension of the suspects, adding that the people in blue remain on the ground, working towards a safer and secure South Africa for all.
