Suspect arrested after high-speed chase linked to Brooklyn cellphone snatching spree

A suspect connected to a string of cellphone snatching incidents is set to appear in court after being arrested during a police chase that ended with the recovery of suspected stolen items and a seized vehicle.

A suspected cellphone snatcher linked to a series of incidents in Brooklyn is expected to appear in the Pretoria Central Magistrate’s Court on March 19.

He was arrested following a high-speed chase on Monday night, March 16.

Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said the arrest comes after security teams received information about a silver Audi allegedly used in cellphone snatching incidents in the area.

“The vehicle was quickly spotted after a lookout was circulated, prompting a co-ordinated response from multiple security and law enforcement units,” said Van Dyk.

He continued that when officers tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver failed to comply, leading to a high-speed pursuit through the Brooklyn area.

Van Dyk added that the suspects eventually abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into nearby bushes.

“A search operation was launched, resulting in the arrest of one suspect, while others managed to escape,” said Van Dyk.

He said the suspect was apprehended after fleeing from the vehicle.

“Several items, including suspected stolen cellphones and false registration plates, were recovered. Further investigation is underway to determine whether the suspect can be linked to additional cases,” said Van Dyk.

According to Van Dyk, authorities also seized the silver Audi believed to have been used in the crimes, along with several cellphones suspected to be stolen.

Police have urged residents to remain vigilant as investigations continue to trace additional suspects linked to the incidents.
