Tuks Rugby celebrates historic sixth Varsity Cup victory
The University of Pretoria and Tuks Rugby celebrated a historic milestone as the team secured its sixth Varsity Cup title, marking the most wins in the tournament’s history.
Celebrations took to the streets of Hatfield, where Tuks rugby players paraded from campus on an open-top bus and were greeted by cheering students and supporters.
The procession made its way to the Hatfield/UP Student Centre, where hundreds gathered in a festive atmosphere to welcome the champions home.
The victory came after Tuks’ resounding 31–3 win over the NWU Eagles in the final. This commanding performance secured Tuks’ place as the most successful team in Varsity Cup history.

The energy of the celebration was amplified by the Tuks cheerleaders, whose performances matched the excitement of the crowd. As the team made their way through supporters to the stage, the players were met with overwhelming admiration.

Speaking after the victory, team captain Dillon Smith reflected on the journey, highlighting the resilience and unity within the squad. Head coach Dewey Swartbooi also guided the team through a remarkable comeback story, from relegation in 2023 to champions in 2026.

University leadership, including Vice-Chancellor Professor Francis Petersen praised the team’s achievement and its impact on campus pride.

As students rushed to capture photos with the players, the squad’s status as campus icons was clear. Their sixth title not only cements a legacy of excellence but also inspires the next generation of players.
