They started working together earlier this year with the aim of reviving the Bacardi music style.

Three musicians known for using a music style which gave rise to the popular ‘amapiano’ are joining forces to bring Bacardi music back to the industry. The trio consists of Phillip Takalani, known as Mokakati Jack, Muziwakhe Mohase, aka Dj Sasasa, and Nyiko Vilangkulu.

They started working together earlier this year with the aim of reviving the Bacardi music style.

This August they released their first single album called Mamjiji and have also shot a music video for the single.

Bra Fani used to play the music with his niece and nephew and he decided to spread it around Mamelodi.

“Bacardi music was played at a lot of social events around Mamelodi and also at local pubs.”

“The music grew bigger and was played around Pretoria, across the country and eventually it went abroad,” said Makakati Jack.

It used to be instrumental music until things changed in the early 2000s and artists began to add lyrics. Mokakati Jack said releasing the single album is to show people of Mamelodi and across the country that Bacardi music is the culture of Mamelodi – it’s not dead and it is here to stay.

“Amapiano music originates from Bacardi that is why we are bringing it back,” said Mokakati Jack.

“Most of amapiano songs instrument comes from Bacardi and most of the music producer in the past they used to play Bacardi and now they have moved on to amapiano.”

Dj Sasasa said he was happy at the thought of people once again dancing to Bacardi music this coming summer.

Dj Sasasa, Nyico-loco and Mokakati Jack going back to Urban Bacadi music.
