Soshanguve man tackles GBV through song
Pule has dealt with GBV in his own life and accredits these experiences as inspiration for the song.
“I’ve had enough of violence against women and children in our community – and that’s what’s really inspired me to make this song.”
Ivan Pule Mollo (40), professionally known as Pule, from Soshanguve has been using his musical talents to address social issues affecting the public.
His latest single “U Dokotela Wo Thando” is an afro/acoustic tune calling out perpetrators of gender-based violence (GBV) as well as the culture that permits such behaviour.
Pule has dealt with GBV in his own life, and he accredits these experiences as the inspiration for the song.
“My sister was in an abusive relationship when she died in a car accident. We suspect GBV caused the accident. That loss affected me deeply and I wrote this song as a way for me to heal, to mend my pain.”
Drawing inspiration from kwaito veterans such as Mandoza and Mdu Masilela, Pule has been struggling in his musical journey for over 20 years, but hoped his recent partnership with Afromel entertainment will be a fruitful one.
“Those guys (Afromel) really convinced me to stick with my music. I was in a dark place and didn’t think that the business was for me anymore, but my manager Simon, and producer Kefiloe gave me the kick I needed to keep going.”
Things seem to finally ramp up for Pule with the release of “U Dokotela Wo Thando” and he now has an EP on the way as well.
The upcoming EP titled “Power to the People” is a homage to his supportive community that always motivated him to carry on pursuing music despite setbacks. Pule hoped that his story will inspire other Soshanguve youth to keep pursuing their dreams irrespective of their situation.
Pule advised upcoming artists to register their music and be weary of how the music industry “game” can take advantage of them.
“This isn’t something that can happen overnight. You need heart, you need perseverance and you need to pray every single day, never give up.”
