Lyttelton NPO helps abused women
The NPO provides counselling and skill-development services
Basadi Bar Moshito (BBM) Foundation, an NPO in Lyttelton, provides counselling, training and other services to women who have been victims of abuse.
The NPO was started last year by Antoinette Malukele, Harmony Malope and Karabo Maluleke.
These three women saw a desperate need to help women who were victims of abuse and GBV in the community.
“This is a major problem in our country and we want to reach out and help women here in Centurion,” said operations director Harmony Malope.
“They need help and we are ready to assist them.”
The primary aim of the NPO is to provide women with skills that will allow them to find work and become independent.
The NPO also tries and link them with other people who can provide them with additional help if needed.
Currently, the NPO has a team of 15 volunteers, most with a social work, counselling background and other fields that have equipped them with the necessary skills to provide women with the help they need.
With their specialised skills and training, these volunteers can provide women with one-on-one counselling to help them cope with their trauma.
Malope said she is very grateful for the support they have received so far, especially from the local churches who kindly allowed them to use their premises.
“We have received a lot of help in our journey so far and we are super grateful,” she said.
“We want to reach out to as many women as we possibly can and the only way we can do that is with the help of the community.”
They also work closely with a men’s shelter situated close to their premises.
The NPO depends entirely on donations to keep providing these essential services and calls on members of the public to donate.
She said the NPO’s greatest ambition was to get its own shelter to be able to provide a wider range of services to more women around the Centurion area.
On Saturday, members of the NPO attended the foundation’s Inspirational Women Cocktail Lunch where they met many inspirational figures including Generations actor Mpho Molepo.
