Sanco women’s desk committee launched

“Women are the face of poverty, they are victims of GBV and men are still dominating even though we are supposed to be 50-50.”

Women of the South African Civic Organisation (Sanco) on Thursday elected the Women’s Desk Committee in a meeting held at the Curator Building in the city centre, Pretoria.

The event, which also served as an official opening of Sanco’s women’s wing in Tshwane, saw all committee members elected unopposed.

They included chairperson Evelyn Matlaila, deputy chairperson Dorah Motau, secretary Kgomotso Galoshi, treasurer Nhlanhla Mlambo and organiser Thandi Kekana.

“The new committee will be dealing with issues affecting women in the city,” Matlaila told Rekord.

Matlaila said the issues affecting women include poverty and gender-based violence (GBV) among others.

“Women are the face of poverty. They are victims of violence while men are still dominating even though we are supposed to be 50-50.”

She said, as women, they felt that it was about time that Sanco begin to play its role in addressing issues facing women.

“It is only women who understand the issues of other women,” she said, adding that women should take a lead in addressing their problems as they know them better.

She said the burning issue at the moment was that women were suffering because of the high unemployment rate.

“The unemployment rate is high and I believe that this is one of the reasons we have a high rate of gender-based violence.”

She said unemployed women stayed with abusive men who are employed just to have food on the table.

“We want women to be entrepreneurs, start their businesses and be independent.”

She said the committee would, among others, mainly focus on women’s empowerment.

Newly elected regional secretary Kgomotso Galoshi said she was happy to see women stand up and help themselves.

“This platform provides us with an opportunity to come together and fight problems,” Galoshi said.

The event was attended by Gauteng economic development department chief director Toivo Muofhe, who told them about the services provided by the department.

“We came here to share information about available opportunities with them,” Muofhe told Rekord.
