Sunnyside police and community patrollers remove ‘lawlessness’ from streets
The suspects were arrested for possession of illegal drugs, violation of the Immigration Act, driving under the influence of alcohol and drinking in public, among others.
Nine people under the influence of alcohol were arrested in Sunnyside on Friday for conducting themselves in a manner that could harm either themselves or others.
This formed part of a joint crime combating operation by the Sunnyside police together with community patrollers to fight lawlessness in the area through stop-and-searches, foot patrols, roadblocks and surveillance, among others.
“The operation resulted in the arrest of 35 suspects,” Sunnyside police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela said in a statement.
Mavimbela said the operation, which took place on Friday afternoon and extended into the late hours of the night was aimed at curbing serious and violent crimes often committed over weekends.
“The police and community patrollers caught 16 suspects for violation of the Immigration Act and three for possession of illegal drugs.”
The operation also saw six motorists apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol and several pedestrians for drinking in public.
Sunnyside station commander Brigadier Matshidiso Kgoadi praised both the police and the community patrollers for the successful operation.
“Job well done,” Brigadier Kgoadi said.
She encouraged the two partners to continue their good work in order to reduce crime in the area.
“There is still a long way to go. We expect that the level of visibility and police activities will be heightened over weekends as we move into the festive season to ensure that our community feels safe.”
Police said the suspects would appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court this week.
