Palissander Chamber Choir celebrates 30 years
Since inception, the choir has been reaching out to vulnerable children and youth.
Very popular Palissander Chamber Choir will celebrate its 30-year anniversary later this month.
To celebrate this milestone, the choir will perform new and old songs in three concerts in the Pretoria area.
Established in 1992, the choir is one of the leading chamber choirs in the country.
Its country-wide tours have entertained thousands of music lovers through the years.
The choir’s core values are passion, abundance, joy, respect and acceptance.
Much of the choir’s success can be attributed to founder and conductor Sarita Hauptfleisch, who has been at the helm of the choir since inception.
Hauptfleisch founded the choir with the purpose of “making music for the soul”.
With this purpose in mind, the choir has developed to become an “ambassador for love and peace”.
“The choir achieves this by engaging the audience not only musically, but also intellectually and emotionally through programmes bound together by central themes.
“This converts a choir concert into a spiritual experience for all,” said Hauptfleisch.
Since 2004, the choir’s central themes have addressed topics such as peace, democracy, tolerance, the response to HIV/Aids and respect for the earth.
For many years the choir has been associating itself with organisations that reach out to the vulnerable children and the youth.
In 2006, the choir received the South African Choral Society Award for the best contribution to community development through choral music.
To mark its 30th anniversary, the choir has decided to go with a theme “sing like a planet”, inspired by the idea that planets create their own unique sound as they travel through space.
Just like these planets, people can make and share their own unique sounds.
“To sing like a planet, is to make spontaneous and unstoppable music just because you are who you are,” said Hauptfleisch.
“This year our festival programme talks to the music of the planets, soul music and our own language.
“We sing about music, love and joy in a mixture of exciting new music and old, familiar favourites.
“The programme includes a variety of styles and is accessible to everyone.
Songs they will perform include: “Stone” by Jacob Narverud, “The spheres” (Ola Gjeilo), “Musica animam tangens” (Joshua Shank), “Sing gently” (Eric Whitacre) and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (Queen), among many others.
The choir will perform at Pierre van Ryneveld Geloofsfamilie, Baltimore Road 14, Pierre van Ryneveld Park on October 23; at the hub at Future Africa Campus, University of Pretoria, South Street on October 29; and at Domus Dei Randburg-Suid on October 30.
Tickets cost R150 (R100 for children under 12).
