Police recover a third suspected illegal firearm in Stinkwater in month

Temba police station commander Brigadier Johannes Tau said the recent firearm recovery shows that there are a lot of unlicensed firearms in Stinkwater.

A man and a woman (aged 36 and 31) were arrested for possession of a suspected illegal firearm in Stinkwater, north of Pretoria, last week.

The arrests came after a Ford Fiesta was stopped and searched, according to police spokesperson Sergeant Herman Moremi.

“A silver handgun was found beneath the man’s seat,” said Moremi.

“Neither of them had a licence for the firearm. They said it belonged to the woman’s brother.”

Both were arrested on the spot and would appear in the Moretele magistrate’s court in due course.

“The firearm will be taken to ballistics to determine whether it was used in the commission of a crime,” he said.

It was the third unlicensed firearm that Temba SAPS recovered in a month.

Last month, an AK 47, a revolver and live ammunition were recovered in Stinkwater.

Station commander Brigadier Johannes Tau applauded his crime prevention team for recovering the unlicensed firearm.

Tau said the recent recovery showed that there are many unlicensed firearms in Stinkwater.

“I am very proud to have such dedicated members in our station,” he said.
