Pretoria Dog Rescue embarks on annual community outreach programme

“We started a community outreach programme during the lockdown in 2020, to help people in less-privileged communities with dog and cat food, blankets, dog kennels, medical care, and sterilisations, which is still continuing,” the director Reinette Le Roux says.

Pretoria Dog Rescue has embarked on its annual community outreach programme to assist dog and cat lovers with food for their animals.

Director Reinette le Roux said the programme started during the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown.

“We started a community outreach programme during the lockdown in 2020, to help people in less-privileged communities with dog and cat food, blankets, dog kennels, medical care, and sterilisations, which is still continuing,” Le Roux added.

She said the programme was inspired by the staggering number of calls the organisation received from different families who were feeling the brunt of losing their jobs due to Covid-19.

“They were no longer able to take care of their pets, although they loved them very much. As a rescue organisation, we could not ignore their pleas and appreciated the fact that they reached out and asked for help.”

Staff member and founder of the outreach Antoinette van der Merwe told Rekord that they deliver the food once a month, adding that the programme was not a once-off but ongoing.

“These are people who specifically approach us as the organisation to help, but we can’t afford to assist everyone as this is a small project. We also have our shelter where we also need to get donations for food,” Van der Merwe said.

Last month the organisation held a dog walk event at Irene farm village and collected about 422kg of dog food for the shelter.

At the time Le Roux told Rekord: “This will go a long way in making sure that the puppies and kennel kids are well taken care of.

This year was again a huge success.

We wish to thank everyone involved in helping the shelter once again this year.”

Pretoria Dog Rescue is a non-profit organisation that caters to a pro-life animal shelter and largely relies on public donations.
