Child Protection launches counselling hotline in Moot

“We are available 24 hours and there will always be someone on the line to help you.”

The National Centre for Child Protection (NCCP) recently launched its counselling hotline in the Moot that will be available 24 hours a day for any person in need.

NCCP announced its new service on local radio station, Radio Pulpit, on Friday and MD Danie van Loggerenberg says “the phone has not stopped ringing since”.

“This is a reflection of how people are struggling with mental health and their day-to-day struggles.

“If you feel like you have nowhere to turn to for help, you do have somewhere, we are doing this because we care and want to make a difference.

“You may have been told in the past that your voice has no meaning nor any value but we want to hear your voice and we want to help you that is what we are there for.”

The hotline is run by a team of registered and trained specialists who will ensure callers receive the help they need.

Once a person reaches the hotline, they are sent an intake form which allows the organisation to get all the information it needs to help that person.

“A child under the age of 18 will need the consent of a legal guardian to receive counselling.

“If there is an issue, we will still guide and assist and work closely with the SAPS to ensure the child still receives the help that they need.

“We trust this service helps to save lives and helps the person sitting in a corner thinking about taking their life to know that they are not alone, and they should reach out to get the help they may need rather than giving up.”

Van Loggerengberg said the hotline has been receiving calls non-stop since the announcement.

“I can’t even begin to explain how many calls we are receiving,” he said.

“We have people dealing with all sorts of problems, from financial difficulties to marriage problems.

“We also have parents who are having difficulties with their children and people who are overwhelmed with life and just need someone to reach out to.”

Van Loggerenberg said the hotline has made him realise just how many adults out there have not dealt with childhood trauma, and are only now really given the chance to reach out to someone willing and able to help.

He encouraged everyone facing difficulties to reach out and call the hotline.

“We are available 24 hours and there will always be someone on the line to help you.”

He says most calls are from people between the ages of 16 and 35.
