Akasia police are investigating a case of malicious damage to property after a motorist’s vehicle was damaged by a stone thrown by a pedestrian who was standing in the middle of the highway on Saturday.
According to reports, the victim was driving along the R80 at 18:00 when a man appeared in the middle of the highway. The driver hooted at him to move, but the man threw a stone at the car, damaging the passenger side window.
The motorist drove straight to the police station to report the incident.
Akasia police spokesperson Lindiwe Mabaso warned motorists to be extra vigilant as criminals are returning to the R80 to rob motorists as the festive season is fast approaching.
“They want to make money by robbing people of their valuables and in some cases their vehicles.
“We want to encourage motorists to be on high alert this festive season and to use alternative routes if they see anything suspicious,” Mabaso said.
“Motorists should avoid stopping on the highway if they are attacked. Instead, they should drive to a place of safety and call the police.”
Mabaso said these robberies often happened in the early hours of the morning.
“People should avoid travelling during these hours.”
Robberies along the R80 are a long-term concern for residents in the area.
Police urged residents to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the unknown perpetrator by calling the station on 012 564 0700.
