‘No bail’ say Mamelodi residents outside court

A 56-year-old rape-accused briefly appeared in court, but the case was postponed to November 28 for further investigation.

A group of angry Mamelodi Section D1 residents protested outside the Mamelodi magistrate’s court on Tuesday demanding justice for the rape of a 14-year-old girl.

The 56-year-old suspect briefly appeared in court on Tuesday, however, the case was postponed to November 28 for further investigation. The suspect will remain in police custody.

It is alleged that the accused, known to the victim, lured the child to his place where he raped her then gave her R50 not to tell.

Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said the accused was arrested on Saturday.

“A case of rape was reported on Saturday and the police started their investigations,” said Maheso.

“We are working hand in glove with social workers, NGOs and other community based organisations in addressing GBV and invite the community to join our 16 Days of Activism campaign.”

Community representative, Hluphi Mokwena said the protesters were at court to support the family of the victim.

Mokwena said community members met on Sunday after news of the rape and the accused handing himself to the police broke.

She said the residents protested outside the court demanding the accused not be released on bail but must remain in police custody until justice prevails.

“The court should permanently remove rapists from our society and set an example and make those planning of committing a similar crime think twice before raping anyone,” concluded Mokwena.
